Malinda Breaks Duncan Out

This is part of our book we're working on.  It's a thought I've been toying with for awhile.  Let me know what y'all think!! Thanks 💗

“I didn’t do anything wrong!” Duncan said.
“I know, why do you think I’m here?” Malinda replied. “I’m literally breaking you out of prison.  Don’t you understand?  I’m here to save you.”

“Thank you, we need to get out of here immediately before they take us.” Duncan said with urgency in his voice.

“Let’s go.  I’ve got everything we need.” Malinda said as she showed him what she had brought.

As the climb down the tower, they hear shouts.  The guards already notice that Duncan is missing.  There is no time to lose as they rush down the courtyard of the prison.

“Duncan, go.  It’s you they want back. Run!  I’ll meet you at Gettysburg, they’ll never expect us there.”

“No.  Not without you.  Run, Malinda, run!” Duncan cries as he pushes her farther.

Running fast and hard, they both follow the North star and make their way out.  Half an hour passes, and suddenly the quiet of the night is taken by the sound of hounds.  Running to catch them. Malinda hadn’t prepared for this contingency.

“Duncan – they have hounds.  What do we do?” She huffs frantically.

“I don’t know.  I can’t see anything.  Do you see skunkweed?  That’ll get them off the scent for a minute.”

“What’s it look like?” She says.

“I can’t explain it in the dark. Oh!  I found some!  Rub this on you. Then run, and don’t stop until you reach the river.  Swim to the other side and wait for me.  If I don’t make it back in a quarter of an hour, go.  I’ll find a way to meet you at Gettysburg.” Duncan said in a whispered tumble of words.

“What about you? I can’t leave you here.” Malinda says urgently.

“I’ll catch up.  They won’t get me again—if something does happen, remember.  I love you and I am so sorry—for everything.” Duncan says with a catch in his throat.

“I love you.  Goodbye.” Malinda whispers as she starts to run into the night.

“I love you too, sis.” Duncan replies as he watches her fade into the distance.  “Ok, boys. Come and get me.” He runs into the night, in the opposite direction.

“Duncan!  Where are you?” someone yells.

“Be quiet, Forester.  She just ran off.”

“Why’d you let her go?  She knows too much!” Forester replies with vehemence in his voice.

“Yea, that may be true, but I couldn’t let her see me with you.  She can’t know about me.” Duncan says with a just a hint of remorse in his tone.
