The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: Book Review
First off, I started writing down daily encouragement and verses, so here are today's (July 31)
Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8
What is the difference between an obstacle and an opportunity? Our attitude towards it. Every opportunity has a difficulty, and every difficulty has an opportunity. J. Sudlow Baxter
Ok now to the book review!
The Wizard of Oz book was so good! It is a children's book and fiction. However, it was a delight to read! There are 4 main characters: Dorothy, The Scarecrow, The Tin-Man, and The Cowardly Lion. They are traveling across Oz to get to the Emerald City for different gifts from the Wizard. This book shows their travels and who/what they come across. It is a book full of friendship, danger, excitement, and magic.
Dorothy is trying to get back to Kansas (where she accidentally got taken in a tornado and dumped in Munchkinland), Scarecrow is trying to get brains, Tin-Man is trying to get a heart, and the Cowardly Lion is trying to gain courage. On the way there, they develop friendships with each other. It is a friendship that ultimately shows the readers that people and things are not always what they seem and shows that if you think you don't have something, just look and you might.
Dorothy in the beginning is sick of where she lives in Kansas. It's dry, there's no color, and everything is always the same. She then lands in Oz. Where everyone is happy and cheerful, the land pops with color, and she now has something to do! But Baum speaks from the heart when he describes Dorothy's homesickness and why she is so desperately trying to get back home. Even if it isn't the best place she always dreamed about, she's there with the people she loves. While Oz is a beautiful land, it can't compare to the love she gets from the people who love her in Kansas. So, she goes to the Wizard. The Wizard gives Tin-Man his heart, Scarecrow his brains, and Cowardly Lion his Courage. Dorothy he personally helps take back to Kansas and in the process, he gets taken. Dorothy remains behind and has to go to the Witch of the South (Glinda) to figure out how to get home. In the end, she does, however, and lives with her aunt and uncle happily.
At the start of the book, there are 4 witches. The Wicked Witch of the West, the Wicked Witch of the East, The Good Witch of the North, and The Good Witch of the South. One witch is eliminated by Dorothy's house dropping on her and the other gets taken out by Dorothy (she didn't mean to, however). The Good Witches of the North and South appear to help Dorothy, but they aren't necessarily the running characters in this book. Neither are the Wicked Witches of the East and West, but they are talked about more.
Baum truly knew what he was doing when he wrote this book! It is a great book for children and even adults like to read it! I hope you'll give this book a try! If you've already read it, I'd like to know what you thought of it:) Another thing is, if you are sick of the way things currently are with political correctness, this book is chock full of things not being "correct" (notice I put that in quotations XD). So it is also a great read that.
