Book Review: Fahrenheit 451

This book turned out to be a really nice book!  I read it a long time ago (like 8th grade I think) and just got a need to read it again.  It is such a good book and it is quite accurate (metaphorically) how our world is going today.  Yet it was written in the 50's.  So basically Ray Bradbury was fortetlling the future.  If you haven't read 1984 yet, this is the more teen friendly, appropriate version.  If you are keeping up with the times, people are telling everyone lies and the media is brainwashing the people who watch them with their wrong ideas on everything from race to covid.  Exactly like they are saying in the book.  There's even a girl in this book (who opens his eyes originally) who was based off of a girl in a short story that Bradbury wrote about it being illegal to walk anymore and this girl kept getting arrested for walking.

Here is an overview of the book.  I am trying to keep out spoilers, so if you decide to read it, it will be exciting for you!

It opens up with this firefighter.  Except, this being in the future, they aren't fire fighters anymore.  They start fires.  If anyone is caught with a book, their entire house and all their belongings get burnt.  If the person/family refuses to leave their house, they will be burnt with it.  Then, after seeing this for his entire life, the firefighter decides to read a book to see what everyone is defending.  After he reads the book, his life is changed.  He sees that he is on the wrong side and goes to the right side.  With a mentor, he starts telling other people about how this has changed his life, and the book ends with him leading others to different cities to try and tell people the truth.

Something that is funny, is that this book is about a future where everything is cheap and shallow.  Yet, schools (and I'm meaning public schools) who claim that they are shaping our kids for the future, deny them this book.  It isn't even on most public schools library shelves.  The Bible tells us to stay away from hypocrisy, so if we claim to be Christians, we should make sure our children know the difference between what the schools are teaching and the truth, and how to defend their faith.  The schools today are teaching children that anything shallow is better than deep thinking.  We need to raise up our children (a new generation) for Christ, against all these issues

Another great thing about this book is it has biblical teachings and Bible verses in it.  Like, how cool is that?  Bradbury included Bible teaching which is very intriguing and can help provoke conversations with fellow readers, or even people who don't understand it, but want to talk!

If you are a parent and are reading this, I would suggest reading it before allowing your children to read it.  There is some language and more sensitive topics that you may feel your child is not yet ready to read.  If you are an adult who is thinking about reading this, please do!  Even if you just skim it the first time (that's what I did) you can still gather a lot from this book!  Thank you for reading this and have a blessed week!

  1. Oh y'all...this being written in 1953 is about the future, but if you read the book he says like 2022 or somewhere close. So if you've ever watched Back to the Future, you know what I'm saying XD They thought we'd have flying cars in 2015 XD
